For the past month or so, i've been going to bed with Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, which has proved to be an interesting, enlightening and highly enjoyable experience, although i am sad to report that this brief affair is now at an end, or in other words, i've now finished the book.

I refer to The Duchess by Amanda Foreman, although i've yet to see the recent movie of the same name starring Kiera Knightly, which i (perhaps unkindly) have a slight hunch resembles the book in the same fashion that chalk resembles cheese.

I would, however, be keen to see what Hollywood made of such an enthralling woman as the Duchess; who was showered with adoration, respect and affection wherever she went by all who were priviliged enough to encounter her.

Only her husband, the Duke, it seems remained coldly unappreciative of her many charms and talents.

Their marriage was a triangular affair involving themselves and Lady Elizabeth Foster (who i didn't particularly like, if i may say so)...but her political stature was undeniable, her gambling debts vast, her beauty and grace renowned and her private affairs always intriguing.

Certainly, as the book cover had suggested, there were often parallels to be drawn with her illustrious descendant, Diana, Princess of Wales and the more i read about Georgiana's life (1757-1806) the more i warmed to her and became engaged in her story.

In fact it is true to say that i was almost sorry to finish the book, the Duchess (like so many a lover) had left me before i was really ready for her to go.
