There is a strange peace in the house today, a temporary haven of solitude on this sunny Good Friday for me to consider anything that pleases me. My wife has flown off for a few games of bingo leaving me in charge of an egg mayonaise sandwich and a sausage roll, from which pursuit she'll hopefully return clutching wads of cash.
I have the joys of food shopping to look forward to after her game has finished and i really need to get myself some new sunglasses, having broken my old pair at the end of last summer. Trying to view the finer aspects of the local wildlife, ie- all those lovely parading bums and boobs, is no easy task when you're squinting in bright sunlight like a short-sighted mole.
Outside my window, the back garden basks in the warm sunshine, i can almost hear the grass whispering as it challenges me to make some effort to put it all back in order again, which i surely will before returning to work on tuesday...but not today; thrashing around the garden with a roaring lawnmower would almost be an insult to the peace that prevails this afternoon, i'd much rather simply relax and appreciate it.
Tomorrow, or maybe the day after, i will work like a demon out there and therefore it is only prudent that today i conserve my precious energies as if my slothfulness is a virtue to be admired and spoken of with hushed tones of awe, a beautiful gift of pure inertia.
Never do today what can be put off until tomorrow, i always say...after all, a garden is for lying around in when it's hot, a place to escape the world and do the sacred things in life like sleeping, reading, drinking and soaking up the sun.
